“In fair Verona, where we lay our scene…”–William Shakespeare
Verona charmed my heart! I know most people probably skip over it when touring northern Italy, but I loved visiting this little city! In my opinion, Verona has a small town feel but yet has some amazing things to offer visitors. It’s even a UNESCO World Heritage site!
Here was our walking route for the day:
Our first stop after a quick breakfast was at the Verona Arena! Although this arena is smaller than the colosseum in Rome, it is apparently older. This arena is now the home of many operas and other performances, so when you tour the arena make sure to not be disappointed with the modern stadium seating in the lower bowl and the original stone seating only in the upper levels.
Next up was Juliet’s House! I am an avid chick-flick watcher and so I knew we had to visit Juliet’s House to see one of the film sites of “Letters To Juliet”. I loved seeing her balcony and the famous statue in the courtyard. You can even leave a letter to her on the walls of the entrance to the courtyard, just like in the movie!
Stop #3 was Castelvecchio! This is a restored medieval castle that has a museum packed with art inside.
If you choose not to go the museum route, make sure to explore the grounds and then walk across the Castelvecchio Bridge for some neat photos and views of the river!
Arco dei Gavi is another neat picture point right next door to Castelvecchio along the river.
Again, this city is extremely charming, so make sure to take some time just wandering up and down its streets. The Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori (there’s a statue of Dante here) are great spots to stop if you enjoy architecture, history and Italian eats!
I hope you enjoy Verona as much as Chris and I did! It was a great relaxing pit stop in between two heavily touristed areas (Milan and Venice) and I would highly recommend visiting it on your next trip to Italy!
